President on 14 December 2024 Joe Biden Released a statement on the 12th anniversary of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. He said that people affected by the tragedy advocate for change.
“With the strength of this courageous movement on our side, we have made historic progress toward reducing gun violence over the past four years,” Biden said. “I signed the most significant piece of gun safety legislation in almost 30 years. I announced dozens of executive actions to keep guns out of dangerous hands and take particularly dangerous weapons off our streets. … After four years under my administration, murders are down, crimes are down, and we’re seeing fewer mass shootings. “This progress is no accident.”
Nevertheless, the President acknowledged that “more must be done” and that Congress “has an obligation to ‘do something’ to protect our children and communities from this scourge of gun violence.”
Biden further noted that America is “the only country experiencing this epidemic” of gun violence. He said Congress should “enact universal background checks, red flag laws, safe storage requirements, and a ban on the assault weapons used at Sandy Hook.”
